Marriage can be a beautiful thing. One that is suppose to be a mirrored image of what the relationship between the Church and Christ is supposed to look like. Sadly this doesn’t happen often. Not because we don’t long for it too but because husbands and wives really don’t know what their roles are. With that being said this being a site for women I think I can help with the wife role in this whole scenario (sorry guys no help for you here).
So what is the Biblical Role of a Wife?
The Bible is chopped full of so many different attributes and traits that as Christians we should strive for. However, wife traits are mentioned specifically. Which makes it kinda easy when you are striving to make your marriage a mirrored image don’t ya think? So here are some of the main ones.
- Be a helper: Our husbands need our support. Plainly explained they need to know that we are their main cheer section. Sometimes this means that we ourselves have to be willing to get a little dirty to help our husbands achieve their goals. It means being willing to support our husbands both through our words and our actions! (Genesis 2:18)
- Respect our husbands: We live in a world and time where this one is seriously lacking. Respecting our husbands means that we are bashing them in public, with our girlfriends or even to their face. Doing so is not helping them in the slightest (see number 1) and it causes them to try less to fulfill their Biblical responsibilities. (Ephesians 5:33)
- Follow our husband’s leadership: For some reason (myself included) we often find it hard to hand over control. We feel that if we do then we ultimately have no say and as women let’s be honest we like detail and we like things to be done a certain way. However, if we don’t allow our husbands to lead day to day things then how can we complain when they don’t pick up helping make decisions on other things. This is so important when you are raising a family and striving to have a Biblical mirrored family. After all aren’t we suppose to trust God’s leadership as a Christian? This one is so important I have found it in a few places in the Bible. Here are two. ( Colossians 3:18-19 ; Ephesians 5: 22-30)
- Love our husbands: Now this one seems like it is a no brainer. The truth is that we have to not only love them but we have to begin to love them the way Christ loves us. Now, this my friend is work sometimes. We need to make sure they know they are loved by us through our actions, our words, and our responses. We need to strive to seek them out and we need to work toward getting to know everything about them (including their love language). (Titus 2:4)
In order to achieve these things, we need to hold ourselves accountable. We need to make sure that these are goals that we are striving toward daily and that we are seeking our wisdom to achieve them effectively. We also need to focus on why it is that we are trying so hard to be a Biblical wife. We do so not because it is easy and will benefit us. Instead, we do so because it is pleasing to the Lord and we want our marriage to be a mirror of Christ and His Church.
