For a week after a dear friend of mine passed, I felt numb. The slightest things made me cry, getting dressed just wasn’t going to happen and venturing out of the house simply wasn’t going to happen either. I just wanted to sit on my couch, eat, veg out in front of the television and cry. I needed comfort. The comfort that normally came from writing here in this little corner, that usually happened while I talked with my recently departed friend and tackling fun online projects.
Knowing good and well eventually was eventually gonna want his wife back, I turned to two things I knew would help me…….God and projects. The next few days I spent hours in our yard. Discovering vegetation and foliage the former owner had planted, built a chicken coop with my husband and sat on my front porch with my Bible in hand. When another dear friend dropped off new chickens (an early birthday present) one was quickly named after my friend. Yep, God, project and my chickens are helping me find comfort.
When Grieving You Must Find Comfort:
Comfort is needed to process and to deal with all the emotions that one is trying to process. For me, that was manual labor because that is when I can process and think the clearest. It is well known by those who know me well that it is during domestic tasks that I come up with most of the topics that are discussed right here on this very site.
Others find comfort writing, talking to others, reading, walking, exercises, and/or doing crafts, Of course, these are only a few ways that those who are grieving can find comfort. There are tons more ideas. Each one is unique to the individual just like that person’s grief.
However, discovering healthy ways to receive comfort is key. We can’t allow ourselves to fall into bad habits that will, in fact, cause us more trouble and pain later on. Drinking, overeating, isolating ourselves, and/or vegging out in front of the television, in the end, will only cause us harm.
Comfort while grieving is needed……The key is to find those things that will eventually help to make you smile.
